10:01 am - Brrrrrrr...
Still freezing in Missoula, Montana.  If it weren't for the wonderful people here...

As I wait for my flight to blue waters and white sand, here's an update.

The new RH blog post at http://www.reconstructinghistory.com/blog should be live now as should the latest post on http://kassrh.tumblr.com/

Enjoy!

09:59 am - Well THAT didn't go as expected.
Cliff Notes version, while I wait for a particular email reply...

Saturday: I tidied up the downstairs while Bob installed the structure of the new lights in the sewing room.  On one hand, I was pretty startled at how long that took.  On the other hand, he was *really* meticulous about getting it right for me, which is fantastic.  I managed to reclaim the dining table (no small task,) the kitchen floor, and a good chunk of the library.  The baronial "stuff" that we inherited is neatly piled in the library.  I'm going to leave it there until we get the rest from Dinsdale and Aelfgiva, and then we'll be able to sort it into "we'll use this" and "we'll store this."  At some point there should probably be a purge.

I don't feel like I got much done, but now the house just looks messy instead of like hoarders live there.  I suppose that's an accomplishment.  I also got the cats to an early vet appointment.  Becket was just along for the ride - and peed himself in the car again.  Sigh.  Nishka was just in for blood work - they're re-checking her thyroid and kidney function numbers.  Alarmingly, she's lost more weight, but she's also been under extreme stress until about a week ago when all of a sudden things seem to have gotten better.  Because she had some antiseptic applied, I separated them for a few hours after we got home, and when I opened the doors things were still okay.  Phew!  We have instructions from the vet on how to taper off the Prozac, so hopefully we'll be able to get them off it it in a month.

Sunday: Sunday we went to Suzanne's picnic, and had a lot of fun.  Charlotte got to run around the yard, bounce on the trampoline, and ate an endless progression of junk.  She had a fabulous time.  I'd only intended to stay for a bit and then head home to more cleaning, but we were having such a good time that we stayed until around 8:00.  Fun.

Monday: Charlotte let us sleep in - that never happens.  Bob, in his usual style, spent the morning doing things that could have been done at any time, and started working on the wiring just as our friend Camma came over.  He did a little wiring, did a little shooting, did a little wiring, etc.  It all would have worked out okay, except he ran into house weirdness.  He killed the breaker for "office," which is the sewing room.  It also took out the library (they're a vertical stack.)  Okay.  A little odd.  Odder still was that one wire in the box was still live!  We're not sure where it's from or where it's going, but apparently it's just passing through.

We ran into this in the living room when we were repairing the mouse damage.  The power supply is pig-tailed through the outlets.  Dad's comment is that it's legal, but it's sloppy.  Right now it's annoying.  Bob got it shut down somehow, but something is funky in there - the breaker is tripping.  Which means it's time to take it all back apart and try again.  In a pinch we can ask Dad to come and help, but we're not there yet.

The downside to this is the library having no power.  The desktop is in there, and it's the desktop that's acting as the house server - and more to the point, that's where the modem and the router live.  So there's no internet at home right now.  A trifle annoying, that.  On the other hand, I probably spend too much time playing on the internet - to the detriment of interacting with the person on the other end of the couch.

We'll get it sorted out.  But I'm not going to be online much until we do.

08:27 am - Soooooooooo....
Baronial scrolls...I can has to do them.

I am, evidently, batshit crazy.  I mean, we all knew this, but now, there is  proof.  (Again.  Like we needed more, right??)

I have been asked to do the Bryn Gwlad fall Baronial event scrolls.  Yes, three of them.  One for heavy combat, one for light, and one for archery.  Honesty, since the event is "harvest festival" themed, with no real time or place nailed down, I was at a bit of a loss as to where to start looking for ideas.  There are TONS of illuminations out there, and when you've got "use your judgement, I trust you!" as your guidelines, it can get intimidating.  FAST.

So, I poked The Laurel Brain of Awesome and Niceness (really, she's amazing.  And REALLY sweet.  And doesn't mind me asking six million questions, thank God).  She did a bit of thinking and mentioned that the event falls on the feast of Michaelmas.  From Wikipedia: "Michaelmas, the feast of Saint Michael the Archangel (also the Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel, Uriel and Raphael, the Feast of the Archangels, or the Feast of Saint Michael and All Angels) is a day in the Western Christian calendar which occurs on 29 September. Because it falls near the equinox, it is associated in the northern hemisphere with the beginning of autumn and the shortening of days. In medieval England, Michaelmas marked the ending and beginning of the husbandman's year, George C. Homans observes: "at that time harvest was over, and the bailiff or reeve of the manor would be making out the accounts for the year."[1]"

So, she suggested maybe using St. Michael, at least for the heavy scroll, and I think it's a fabulous idea!  After doing some research, though, I'm going to use the Archangel Michael for the light scroll, St. Sebastian for the archery scroll and St. George and the Dragon for the heavy scroll.

You can see some of the images I've been looking at under the cut.  Or not.  I have to upgrade my account again to upload images, evidently.  Meh.  I'll put 'em over at the Blogger.

05:41 pm - Adventures in Trailers

Last week we bought a trailer, used, from a fellow SCA person.  Good price, really nice trailer.  Jim was able to get it inspected and registered on Thursday and we hit the road on Friday.  About two hours into our trip, we hear a noise.  After a short while I get anxious and Jim pulls over.

Where the trailer wheel falls off.

I go into the shop whose parking lot we pulled into to ask where we are.  Turns out to be a Christian thrift store and the lady there was super nice.  No real physical address in this part of the universe, but there is a towing service/auto repair shop just around the corner.  Sweet.

We walk down to the shop and talk with Randy.  Randy puts on hold what he’s working on, brings a floor jack, and takes a look at the trailer wheel.  All of the lug nuts are gone, and the wobbling wheel has worn down the wheel studs and opened the holes on the wheel.  Randy was confident he could fix it quickly once he obtained the parts.

Four hours later, we drop the trailer at Randy’s and go purchase the wheel studs and lug nuts.  Randy’s delivery person wasn’t able to find wheel studs and nuts at their regular suppliers, but Randy tracked down what we needed at an RV/trailer store.  We stopped by McD’s got food, got some gas, and after getting back to the trailer, Randy had the spare mounted in less than 10 minutes.  He also checked the lug nuts on the other wheel and tightened them.

We still got to the site with plenty of daylight left to set up the tent and unload the trailer into the tent.  All was good.

Jim takes the truck and trailer to the parking lot and hits one of the campground pavilions with the trailer.  The trailer is taller than the truck and Jim forgot this.  So he ended up creasing the corner just a bit, not really too bad, but it put a small hole in the trailer.  No worries, we’re not expecting rain for the entire weekend, and the trailer was empty anyway.

We got home from the event yesterday, no worries at all.  The trailer is already halfway repaired.  Jim got some aluminum, glue, rivets, and caulk and it will all be good.  Despite the bumpy start to owning a trailer, I think we’ll be happy we got it.  We’ll be able to store the pavilion in it, freeing up space in both the basement and shed.

We also got to meet the nicest people in this adventure.  Randy could have raked us over, but charged us fairly.  The lady in the thrift store could have asked us to stop loitering and soaking up her AC, but she didn’t.  Folks at Ruby were also great with helping set up and take down.  Overall it was a great weekend.  Hot, but great.

We daytripped Ruby Joust and it was a good decision. The day was beautiful, though hot. I cannot imagine how the fighters managed in that heat, but they were still on the field when we left in the afternoon.

It was wonderful seeing so many people and having a chance to say hello or even more.

The heat got to me, though, after I decided to get out from under the shade and walk around the listfield (I was on a mission) - between the heat and some pain, I was washed out. Ended up laying down in the backseat of the car with a couple of pillow. I could have happily stayed there the rest of the day but my travel-mates decided that they were ready to leave too, so off we went. I was in bed by nine in the evening... and slept until eleven this morning. I'm still a little shakey.

But I had fun, by golly! I don't regret going! (I do regret missing things, like JC's vigil and elevation.) I can't wait to see the pictures people are going to post.
